Renewal Youth Gardens
Update for spring 2010
On March 31 we held a planning meeting for our Fundraiser, which takes place on
April 27th at the Baraboo Arts Banquet Hall. We are still seeking donations for
our silent and live auctions. The following locations are selling tickets and
have the decorated flower pots on display: Pierce’s Supermarket, the Coffee
Bean, Village Booksmith, and Flambeau Outlet Store. Call Shirley @ 063-3367, if
you want to bid on a pot. Next Fundraiser planning meeting will be Mon. April 19
@ The Barn Restaurant.
We also sell Market Baskets to support this project. The cost is 255.00 for 17
weeks of produce. The pick up point is The Grainary health food store. We can
take 6 more Market Basket orders. Brochures with order forms inside are
available at The Grainary, or call Shelley Mordini @ 963-3379.
We have begun prepping beds and planting at the Hwy 33 garden. The mulching and
composting we have done over the past 8 years is definitely paying off. The
dense, clay soil has become more friable and is loaded with earthworms. We also
have a garden at 1531 Lake Street, which needs more mulching.
We need more hand tools. If you know someone, who has used garden tools they no
longer want, please call Shirley @ 963-3367.
For now, our spring work schedule is:
Tuesday 9-11 am
Thursday 4-6 pm
We will be working more in May and will host a couple of all day workdays. Call
Shirley, if you’re interested, and I can update the schedule for you.
Regular summer schedule after June 10th
Monday 4-7
Tuesday 8-11
Thursday 4-7
Friday 8-11
We can use all the volunteers, who are interested. Last year we had 5 Master
Gardeners come out on a regular basis. The Hwy 33 garden is located 2.5 miles
east of the Log Cabin restaurant on the David Wernecke and Judy Spring property-
fire no. 13119 E. St. Rd. 33. The other garden is at 1531 Lake Street, where the
Renewal Unlimited building houses Head Start and Fresh Start programs. We are
working on reestablishing a garden on the UW Baraboo/Sauk County campus. Youth,
ages 12-21 are also welcome to volunteer.
March 2010:
Many of the students, who work in the Youth Garden in the summer, take Shelley Mordini's spring Garden Class at BHS. Shelley's class will be starting
seedlings in Feb. to sell at Get Ready . . . Get Set . . . Garden. If you are interested in helping the Garden Class plant seeds, contact Shelly Mordini' at 963-3367
